What You Should Know About Your Kidney and You

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR KIDNEY

Most people don’t know how important their kidneys are. Learn about your kidneys and how to take care of them!

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that are roughly the size of a fist. They’re just below your rib cage, one on each side of your spine.

Every minute, healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood, removing wastes and excess water to produce urine. Urine travels from the kidneys to the bladder via two thin muscle tubes called ureters, one on each side of your bladder. Urine is stored in your bladder. The urinary tract includes your kidneys, ureters, and bladder.

WHY IS YOUR KIDNEY IMPORTANT ?

Your kidneys filter waste and excess fluid from your body. Your kidneys also remove acid produced by your body’s cells and maintain a healthy balance of water, salts, and minerals in your blood, such as sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassium.

Without this balance, your body’s nerves, muscles, and other tissues may not function normally.

  • Your kidneys also produce hormones that aid digestion.
  • keep an eye on your blood pressure
  • make red blood cells
  • keep your bones strong and healthy
